Illinois Coronavirus Update Oct. 19: 347,161 Cases, 9,236 Deaths

ILLINOIS — After setting back-to-back records for new cases last week, and adding nearly 8,000 cases over the weekend, Illinois on Monday reported 3,113 new cases of the coronavirus and 22 additional deaths from COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the virus. Statewide totals now stand at 347,161 confirmed infections and 9,236 known deaths. Another 3,587 probable cases and 260 probable deaths are not included in the official totals.

The latest deaths include:

Illinois Reports 3,059 New Coronavirus Cases, Most Since May 14

ILLINOIS — State health officials on Thursday reported 3,059 new cases of the coronavirus and 32 additional deaths from COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the virus. Barring the more than 5,000 cases reported on Sept. 4 as the result of a three-day backlog, Thursday’s totals represent the most cases reported in a single day since May 14 and the third highest single-day caseload of the pandemic so far. Statewide totals now stand at 310,700 confirmed infections and 8,910 known deaths. Another 2,739 probable cases and 249 probable deaths are not included in the official totals.

Dead WI Mink Test Positive For Coronavirus

Thursday, The National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) confirmed that dead mink at a Taylor County mink farm have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection. That’s the virus that causes COVID-19 in humans. This is the first confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection among Wisconsin’s mink population.

The NVSL confirmed the positive result after preliminary testing was conducted by the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (WVDL).

The Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has quarantined all animals on the farm, meaning no animals or animal products may leave the premise.

Thousands of Minks Die After Coronavirus Outbreaks at Fur Farms Across the U.S.

Thousands of minks at fur farms across Wisconsin, Michigan and Utah are dead following a series of coronavirus outbreaks.

A spokesperson for the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection confirms to PEOPLE that more than 2,000 minks have died since animals at a farm in Taylor County tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, a virus that causes COVID-19 in humans.

Officials said in a press release that the farm, which they did not identify, has been placed under quarantine as authorities launch an investigation and assist in appropriate carcass disposal and cleaning of the animal areas.

Dozens of animal species worldwide may be susceptible to the coronavirus, research suggests.

The previously unknown infection is thought to have started in bats, before “jumping” into humans, possibly via pangolins.

Concerns were raised early in the outbreak when a dog in Hong Kong tested “weak positive” for the coronavirus, however, experts stressed there was “no evidence pet animals can be a source of infection”.
